Over the last few years I have seen a lot of snobbish people who are reading books and reviewing.
People should not look down on others for the choices that they make with what they read. Each person has different tastes and will choose what works best for them.
I know many who stick to one genre and that is great that they found a style that works for them. Just because they don’t read more eclectically doesn’t mean that they aren’t an important part of the reading community.
Recently there was a post on Twitter that people were bringing up in a group full of reviewers and bloggers. It struck a nerve as they said something similar to if you don’t read literary books and books on science and history you can’t consider yourself a book lover.
That is patently false. I love books and blogged about them for six years before giving up the review blog in favour of a writing one where I can showcase my stories and maybe get published.
I do read many genres but there are items that I won’t read either as I have tried them and they just weren’t for me. I can see the beauty in any writing style but there are some that don’t jive with me like romance or erotica. All valid and great genres in their own rights and very much needed.
I think what those who believe what they read is more important is just arrogance talking as who are they to tell anyone that there preferences are more valid than mine.
I don’t read a lot on science as this is not something that interests me though I do read non fiction books that deal with history or biographical style books and memoirs.
To me if you love reading that is what matters the most. If you wish to review great as well but just whatever you choose to read enjoy your time reading and remember of you don’t like a book there is no shame in giving up on the book and picking it up again at a later time.
