My favourite Genres

It’s hard to pinpoint what genres I read and are tops for me. I will read almost any type of book with the exception of erotica.

The ones that I really love and what brought me more into reading is Fantasy. Fantasy is such a large and all encompassing type.

Fantasy for me started with the standard ones that most read classes as High Fantasy. Those are the epic quest books such as The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Of this style of fantasy my favourite books are The Chronicles which are a trilogy of Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

The high fantasy books are great as well as it has the magical races such as elves and dwarves. These are great fun especially when created well and have a lot of fun with making the races unique. In that I think Darksun did one of the best jobs at that by creating the Mul raced half dwarf and half human.

The next branch is historical fantasy which is kind of linked to urban fantasy but deals with the past. Jay Raven has a series of books that work well for this and they also push things as it’s a vampire slayer book. Naomi Novik also has done some with her one series.

The next one is urban fantasy which has some amazingly fun and great books as part. It deals with current day but adds the magical nature as well as other fantasy elements. There are a number of great books in this including Dresden Files by Jim Butcher and Diana tregarde books by Mercedes Lackey.

Fantasy really is a top genre for me and there are so many wonderful books and interesting takes on magic systems and new races.

My next classification is in crime which can have so many subgenre as well since thrillers and mystery are all part of it.

I have found one part of this genre that overlaps is the paranormal thrillers and two of the best are Caroline Mitchell and Linda Prather. Both have written wonderful paranormal investigation books.

There are so many wonderful authors for other types of crime such as MA Comley, Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, Graham Smith and Robert Bryndza. These authors all mean a lot to me since they all have been with me on my blogging journey for a long time.

Mystery books there are so many that could be named but I look at those as more of the who done it books such as you would get from an Agatha Christie. She was the queen of that style and I haven’t seen many that could come up to her level.

A newer mystery style has come up called Cozy Mysteries that deal with the crime but not in graphic details and it really more mentions the crime. Helena Dixon is good at this genre and MA Comley has put a number of these out there.

Psychological thrillers is one of my newest favourites and they deal with the psychological aspects than the other styles. I find that Mark Tilbury does a great job of this and earned a moniker of Twisted from his fans.
