Tropes

Looking at tropes that are used and there are so many that seem to be floating around especially in certain genres.

Fantasy in particular uses a lot especially for women. The main one that I have seen the rape and revenge scenario. This happens in a lot of books and shocks me a lot at how often this is used.

In crime I see a lot of women who become higher ups with the police seem to have a similar trope as well as they are often hard and only seem to show anger or harsher emotions. While we know that it’s a hard job and you have to be hard yourself to a point it just seems that many main characters have this.

In Star Wars I also see it where many of the characters were disillusioned people who wanted a better life. A lot were former military or former politicians. While these work it was more interesting to see other points of view. Most military was just the higher ups that command big starships.

Tropes work and they do very well but the question is do we overuse them to the point where they aren’t as affective storyline?

For me it all depends on the story and how they are told. If the story makes sense then use it and make it the best you can.
