After the 2016 Olympics the gymnastics world was hit by the biggest shock we have heard to date. The USA team doctor who had worked with the team forever or so it seemed was arrested and charged with many cases of sexual assault.
That in and of itself is bad enough but many of these poor young ladies were minors. These women or more realistically these girls were betrayed by the person who should have been protecting them and supporting their needs.
Nassar had abused more women then we really know about and it shocked the world to see someone that should have been trusted steal everything from these women.
Many have spoke out about their time and dealing with Nassar. They don’t call themselves his victims as that gave him power but they are his survivors.
I was sickened to hear this case as it is about a sport I was active in as well as still love to watch. The fact that this abuse went unchecked and was known about years before has made me rethink if high level gymnastics is good.
There are still cases going on today of the abuses and some like John Geddard decided after he was to turn himself in to end his own life. There was not closure for the women he had abused or allowed to be abused.
The sport in and of itself is not to blame but the drive to be the best at all costs is. We as fans of the sport need to stand up against these abusive practices.
A friend of mine who is also a survivor and has told her story in her own memoir Unbroken interviewed the judge of the Larry Nassar case. Listening to her was amazing. She is a force of good in this world.
Toe this gave me a chance to really allow myself to distance myself from what had essentially ruined the sport for many of us and has allowed us to move past this part.
Listening to Judge Aqaulina was refreshing. Please listen to this lady speak
