As many know I have a love of fantasy but I am very harsh in my critique of it as well. There are so many fantasy books out there it’s hard to find something unique that makes me just want to continue to read.
This series really had a lot of everything that I wanted. It was very much the feel of a young adult series as it deals with youth more than adults. However the concept is very unique as it deals with Rangers.
Rangers for many like me who have been in the roleplay community think of Rangers purely as a nature warrior who uses bows and other distance weapons.
This book pushes that boundary even more as it shows nature and the bows are a common weapon but also deals with other items such as healing and poisons. It basically pushes them to see so much more about the world but has kept the nature warrior as well.
The main characters you meet in book 1 do stay with you the entire time to a greater or lesser extent.
Lasgol is the main protagonist and is seen as someone who is not trustworthy because of who his father was. His father was seen as a traitor and it carried on over to him. It took some of the culture that deals with The Sins of the Father.
Egil is a booknerd who is seen as an embarrassment to his family as he doesn’t have the strength that they need. He is the character I felt for the most as he seemed so lonely and just didn’t have the ability to really handle it.
Ingrid is the ultimate bad girl. She has such strength and she can be violent as anything especially if she is insulted. She has such a huge personality and just seems to not care what others think. She is also a strong leader.
Viggo is the bad boy and not like Ingrid he has no love of the law or reply of anything at all. He uses the Rangers as a way to escape being a criminal. He had a bit too much of the pyscho in him but you can see that he will do what he must to protect those he considers friends.
Nilsa to me is the epitome of the most well rounded character. She is clumsy and tends to have a lot of accidents but she has such skill with a bow and can do almost anything she sets her mind to. To me she is the best of them as she also is the worst at times and is the most human. Yes she does have faults especially when it comes to magic.
Gerd is a great friend and helpful person that you can see as the heart of the group loving all of his friends as if they were his family. He has the heart that makes him truly one that could easily become a great leader.
Astrid is fast becoming a favourite as while not linked with this group at the camps she has got herself trusted by them all and she is a fierce and loyal comrade in arms.
All of these characters have made these books to be even greater. The only thing I wish is that new characters were brought into the core group that are very different and will eventually be able to help all the members grow to their potential.
