Sharpe’s Assassin by Bernard Cornwell

Historical fiction is big but for some reason most seems to be based recently around the Holocaust from what I have seen. That’s what makes these books so special and makes me feel that excitement again

Based so long ago it is nice to see that they are using a different era for writing about. It seems more interesting in some ways even though this historical era is not really my favourite.

I enjoyed the book as it had great characters who showed a lot of respect for the time period both the good and the bad. It is good that they talk about the more negative aspects not going into huge detail but they don’t gloss over it or make it seem like it was all good with this time period

He has a writing style that is conducive to making you enjoy history and wanting to learn more about the timeframe.

Sharpe is such a great character though in some ways it feels strange as I started at the latest book and not going from the first. You miss a few nuances of the character growth but it’s still easily understandable.

It is amazing to see that a person can succeed going from an enlisted man to a commanding officer. While not as realistic as it is very rare to see someone do this it also shows how great he was that he could become a commanding officer.

Sharpe has compassion and is for the little guys. It makes for great storytelling and even more so it shows growth and progression of a character which for me is what I prefer.

I am looking forward to reading the remainder of this series as it really has brought back my love of historical fiction. Also I am looking more forward to reading his civil war books.
