Thoughts on short fiction

This is a topic that I am passionate about since when I write it is short works of fiction in the fantasy genre.

While I don’t always want short stories as I want more meat in my fiction when I read it. I do love writing it and think even with reading it can be great as you will get a chance to know the authors style.

Writing is a passion but also one that is painful as well. It takes a lot of time and patience to write a short story. Lots of characters don’t work out and you may throw out many stories before you get something that is partially good for work.

I tend to write characters and my stories are kind of left in the dust. It’s one reason I don’t want to do anything to my characters as I work very hard to flesh them out.

It’s difficult as well since the stories themselves take so long to plot out especially if you are planning a series of short stories like what I do. It’s why I don’t generally kill off my characters unless I hate writing them and then I may destroy the character.

Reading short stories is difficult as well at times since you just get a taste but quite often the stories don’t seem to go anywhere and since they aren’t a serial short story it makes it very difficult.

Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy the stories as well just I always find that they are hit and miss. In anthologies I find that maybe a third of the stories are strong, a third are middle of the road and the final third are poor.

My question is what is your take on short stories?
