Dark disciple is a stand alone star wars books dealing at a time in the clone wars. It deals with an character we barely met in Quinlan Vos who is a Jedi of some distinction and a character that I loved in Ventress.
The book is a bit slow in pace and while the writing is very good the story isn’t as compelling when first going through the book
Seeing Vos in this book shows the side of him that I remember from the clone wars show which was annoying and reckless at times.
Ventress shows much more compassion that I had seen before but she still has her attitude as well which is that she doesn’t take fools very well and has to be in charge. She is a control freak most of the times. Always in charge and always in control of herself.
I enjoyed and found the Nightsister training as well as how they are born of the DarkSide but remain themselves with a balance that the Sith don’t have. It makes sense as when you see others like Mother Talzin you don’t see the anger or the uncontrollable outbursts that you see in Vader and Palpatine. It makes it very interesting to see the different versions of the DarkSide the same with the Inquisitors have a different version.
The romance that you can see with Vos is a bit hard to handle. He knows who she is and what she did. He also knows she has never turned away from the Darkside of the Force. The fact that he thinks of her as beautiful to me shows attachment. You would assume someone as talented as he is as a Jedi would sense that she isn’t good for him.
From the old days of the EU Dathomir was always a favourite world for me. The pure delight at having another story remotely linked there both in setting and with characters is making the story feel better.
Ventress was always a great villain. She was overly sexualized and used whatever was to her advantage so that she would succeed. Her personality has changed to a point were she is not wanting to be alone. This goes more against what I have seen with Ventress before as she seemed to love being alone. She worked alone and didn’t want any form of partner.
The writing style of the author doesn’t always blend well with my tastes. There is nothing I can pinpoint of the style it just doesn’t suit me.
Assaj Ventress was always a favourite character. She was over sexualized but she always seemed a bit to in control for the Darkside. This was a fitting story to end the arc of Ventress and that of the Night Sisters.
