The Valdemar Series.

My favourite fantasy series numbering over 59 books to the impressive series. The series spans sommany generations now that it’s at times a bit confusing but what is great is that you see some of the characters from history as she didn’t write the series in order of time but as separate trilogies.

With all the books yes there are some that maybe weren’t quite as good but that’s going to happen especially when writing a huge series. There are inconsistencies as well. For instance in the Skif series they say a thief had never been chosen before but from the Last Herald Mage trilogy one of the apprentices of Savil was an apprentice thief.

There are some amazing characters and the author has always been good about showing diverse characters who are the focal points. You have different classes of culture going from kings to the very poorest peasants. You also have those who had great family life’s to those who were very brutally abused. You also have those who are part of the lgtbq+ groups and you also have a lot of women as main characters who are very strong and self sufficient. This is rare in fantasy and one of the main reasons why I love the series.

My favourite characters:

Talia: she came in the arrows series and had been a guest in many other books. She starts as a younger teen who is brutally abused by her family who is patriarch like. She becomes a well rounded person who finds herself and finds the real family she always wanted.

Mags: this is the character with more books as a main character than any other. Again starts as a younger teen who is basically a slave and is saved by the Heralds. He has no real education and is pushed into a world were he could easily be killed. He becomes one of the best characters in Valdemar showing that one doesn’t have to be in the highest class to be powerful and well thought of.

Darian: part of the K’Valdemar series he is young and proves throughout the series that he has what it takes to do what is necessary including sacrificing himself if need be.

Tarma: part of the Vows and Honour group. This was what made Valdemar what it was as a short story where you meet Tarma. She is an avid warrior and has such a zest for life.

Kethry: from the same series Vows and Honour. She is the mage and looks more like she would be better suited to be a princess than a mercenary. She is a healer and a scholar as well as a warrior. Such a fun character and really makes you look past what a pretty face is and look inside.

Kerowyn: part of a number of books she is the granddaughter of Kethry who. She has mind magic and is an amazing warrior who also has her grandma sword.

Lavan: he was a figure in history known for being the firestarter who was too powerful and basically ended up destroying himself with his powers. The book of his you see what he really was and how he was. It was nice to see a personable side and someone who just wants to be needed.

Amberdrake: this is from the Gryphon series and I loves his attitudes and just what he was. He was a healer of the mind more so than the body. He also was one who wanted that family.

Vikteren: thought of a lower ranked mage during the war with Ma’ar he also was a great friend to the Gryphons and proves he was much more skilled than any would have given him credit for.

Savil: from the last Herald Mage series. She is the aunt of the most powerful of the herald mages and she is a no nonsense mage herself who so the equal to almost anyone in the circle.

Medren: the nephew of Vanyel who is the most powerful herald Mage. He is a pure soul and is a bard. He has such grace in him and thinks more of others before himself.

Jadus: you first meet him in the Arrows trilogy as the mentor of Talia. He was a crippled up man from a war that he was in but was very kindly and loved his music. You see a very lonely person until he starts dealing with Talia and then he becomes this vibrant person who will do whatever he has to for his friends.

Albrecht: from arrows trilogy and then got his own duoligy. He is from the traditional enemy of Valdemar but he has honour and loyalty. He takes the Princess as his special helper and makes sure the royal brat is gone. He is a foresight expert and is one of the reasons that the old war gets worked out.

Many would say Vanyel but for me he wasn’t the ones that were the interesting one or favourite ones from series. He was solid character but I always preferred others in there series.
