The Black Gryphon by Mercedes Lackey

This is the start of the series chronologically and is an emotionally charged book. When I first read this as it came out I wasn’t I early find of it but over time it has become one that I read when I want to have that emotional connection.

I am very fond of most of the characters and some are amazing to see. Too bad they don’t make more appearances in other books.

Skandranon : the black Gryphon who the story you would assume it about. While yes he is a main part of the story he also isn’t the only main character. While most of the story revolves around him it still has a lot to do with others. He feels very immature in this book and he irritates me at times with the way that he makes light of almost everything.

Zhaneel; an amazing character who grows from being a self conscious Gryphon who is treated so badly. She grows a lot which is amazing and you get to see her building the relationships and friendships that mark this world.

WinterHart: she is a powerful presence however she has shown that she was not always that strong person and had to grow with the help of her counsellor and friends. She is such a fun character to read and she shows just how talented and driven she is.

Amberdrake: he is one of the best in the book. He acts with such compassion and he always shows his heart. He is empathic which while that can be a downfall for him as he could lose himself to the pain he works hard to protect his cobbled together family.

The story goes about with life in a mage wars and with the different issues you could potentially go through. There is love and loss which you expect in a good story and especially in a war. You also see people finding themselves.

You meet some of the historical characters such as Urtho who we learn was also known as The Mage of Silence. He is a good character and shows how flawed he was as well with his constant experimenting and creating his magical creatures. You also see how loving he is in how he treats those who are not his equal in magic.
