Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris

Blurb

Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is having a streak of bad luck. First her co-worker is killed, and no one seems to care. Then she comes face to-face with a beastly creature that gives her a painful and poisonous lashing. Enter the vampires, who graciously suck the poison from her veins (like they didn’t enjoy it).

The point is: they saved her life. So when one of the bloodsuckers asks for a favor, she obliges – and soon Sookie’s in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She’s supposed to interview certain humans involved, but she makes one condition: the vampires must promise to behave and let the humans go unharmed. But that’s easier said than done, and all it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly….

My thoughts

Sookie Stackhouse is for me an iconic character in urban fantasy.  She has both food and bad parts of her personality and we all see it.

She claims she has a disability which to her it is however seems a bit insensitive to claim especially with so many people who are disabled.

Living dead in Dallas is the second book in the series and starts with a bang.  Andy is a character I love to hate and it just feels that he is a tool and is used as such in these books.  He doesn’t show much personality other than being a jerk to most people.

If you are a fan of the show than this is where you will end up being frustrated. We start the book with Lafayette the short order cook that we all fell in love with in the first book was murdered.  This to me makes a lot of sense as it shows a lot about Sookie and how she deals with adversity.

The author does a great job of bringing in throughout the series the different supernatural creatures.  However in this book we meet a Maenad who has a special message for Eric the vampire who runs Louisiana.

Pam later becomes one of my favourite characters but she has this creepy vibe to her and not a good creepy.  Some of her comments are just ick worthy.

Eric while he is interesting is not really my cup of tea.  He is much to in it for himself with little cares for the human world he was once part of.

Bill to me I liked as he seemed to be the Southern Gentleman but there was always something darker about him which also put me off.  You can see it in his relationship with Sookie.  He is very controlling and that is definitely a huge red flag.

The setting of this book hase intrigued as I have always wanted to visit Texas and that’s where Sookie is sent despite the fact that she wants to find her friends killer and just happen to protect Andy who hates her.

In some ways the way Charlaine Harris writes about the telepathic nature of Sookie is very similar to what I have seen with Mercedes Lackey.  She shows the usage of this power in multi facets.  I really appreciate the depths that they go to show a type of magic that is all of the mind.

The story itself is quite good.  I enjoy the fact that she is asked to help find a vampire that his nest doesn’t know why he disappeared but just wants him back.

The imagery of this vampire hade smiling as loved the description.  Especially that he basically was a cowboy.

In some ways this story is multiple lines which can make it feel hard to handle.  I think that it was great but it has way too many plot lines to follow.
