Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder

I haven’t gotten to read this before and while not a fan of the tv show as such I do like reading of past times especially ones that you used to love.

The books are short which is good as they are classics and sometimes they are a bit harder to read as the language is from a past time.

The setting is interesting of course as it’s the west and it is all about the daily survival of the people of the area.  Life is tough and sonarw the people.

We see Laura who is the main character from the books as it revolves more around her than the other characters similar to the TV Show.

Pa is a stern man but very loving as well.  He doesn’t put up with nonsense from his girls.  You know not to get into trouble as Pa will use the strap.

Many are shocked as now it would be considered child abuse to hit your kid like that.  This shows a simpler time when it was common for discipline and it to be in the form of corporal punishment.

You see the respect that the kids have for the parents which is sorely lacking a lot these days.  They know that they are well taken care of by their parents and respect the boundaries that they have set mostly.  Yes they are kids and they will all get into trouble at some time.

I like that they show two different types of parenting the way Pa deals with it and the way one of his brothers does.  They talk about the one boy who keeps causing trouble and nothing is done to correct him.  Pa talks about if he was his that he would have tanned his hide.

It is a very endearing book and really shows the life that was.  I enjoyed reading it but I can say it won’t ever be a favourite of mine and the reason for that is I am not really the target audience that it is meant for.  These book to me were targetted for girls as it showed a lot of strong female characters.
