The war had started as a way for the European Royalty to take control of the Bands Territories. The members of the band would fight against this incursion of their sovereignty. It was pitched battles since no one could stand against the sheer numbers that the Cadres could bring to the war.
SummerFawn, the chief elder of her band in the Northwest Territories decided they would be the people who would lead the way. Her wisewoman Aranai would be a catalyst and help protect the people.
In the first engagement after the Blood General had been appointed, a particularly nasty African vampire known as Qadira decided to use shocking attacks on the non-vampire allies and the weaker vampires.
FeatherWing was the first vampire to be destroyed in such a way having her head ripped off causing much damage to the Bands who had taken her in.
Her family members including her sire decided to take matters to the warmongers like a raging storm which was all that was left for them.
StormWind entered his home still very angry he couldn’t help but feel that the Elders should have been more forthcoming with information. They did way less than what he had expected.
His family would have to take the brunt of the damage, however they would take as many out with them. Before he was turned he was a powerful Shaman, he could still use a lot of those spells even if he would use the power of blood instead of the elements.
Father Sun would be with them today he was sure of it. Had he still been human he would have used the magic of the sun and fire to help obliterate his enemies. While he couldn’t do the sun spell and none of the shamans currently training with him were up to casting that spell.
He walked into his council chamber where his family were waiting. Most of them were women as he has changed mostly girls. Of the 12 he had turned that survived only two were men.
The largest was GrizzlyBear who was strong and very good at fighting. He had grown claws that he could easily use. He was the protector but even his abilities in combat would not be able to help.
The second male was SpringHawk who was younger and the newest turned. He was the best scout that had been found in recent history. He was slight in stature and had the body type that was very good for quick striking. If he had been around someone before he could track them mentally wherever they went.
“FeatherWing has been killed by the Blood General. Our Elders have nothing that they can do as they fear the size and might of the Europeans. I have no such qualms that the 13 of us will go after the bitch Qadira.”
One lady came up and put her hand on his shoulder and sent a wave of calm into StormWind. Her name was Lynxa and she was both receptive and projective empathy. She wasn’t much of a fighter but she could help by using her powers and some of them were so scared they wouldn’t fight.
“We agree as you knew we would. FeatherWing was my sister both in life and in death. No one gets away with hurting the family. What do you want to do?”
He bared his teeth; they would do this or die trying. “We are going to take the fight to them. The Blood General who caused this will not survive. I swear this.”
They all agreed but only time would tell
——
War was upon the greatest of the vampires of North America many people hadn’t expected the damage that was to be done. So far many of the members of the bands had died. StormWind was a man on a mission. Qadira the Blood General had destroyed one of his children and must pay.
It was a long past time when the European Royalty learned that they couldn’t get away with anything they wanted. Noone would come to his territory and hurt and kill his people, especially his daughter.
He had already talked to his other children; they were all about to attack the main camp of the Blood General. There were only 7 of them and they would do what they could.
StormWind quickly made his way to the gates using the wind to whip through their enclosures pushing the rain soaking everything.
He blew the gates off their hinges and flung the guards to the ground. “Qadira, I challenge you. If you don’t come out and deal with me personally not a single member of your guard will survive.”
A vampire came.out very dark skin with short hair. She had a long sword in her hands. He glared and the thunder started to crack louder than many had ever heard before.
The raging storm inside him was being released in great waves of anguish. He sent a lightning bolt to strike at the feet of the African lady.
She screamed and started the pattern dance of the blade. She went for StormWind but a man stood in her way. Tall native man with long hair braided and beaded touching his waist. He swung at her with a clawed hand. The sword severed the hand at the wrist. She spun quickly, severing the head of the large vampire. Smiling, she turned for the raging storm.
The attackers screamed in rage as the big man went down at the hands of the Blood General. She was too fast with power that would equal most of those around her. Could they win?
StormWind looked very angry with hands glowing red with the blood magic. He looked at one of the protectors and sent a lightning bolt at him. The Vampire screamed in pain enough for one of the native women to put the wooden stake through his heart.
It was the first death of a European vampire on the soil of North America. He laughed flaring at the bloodied woman he had brought with him. She looked amazing as she glowed with power and it was the colour of blood.
The power of the wind was around him and he flung the wind knocking down the Blood General. He looked on in glee as his power was starting to waiver.
Lynxa turned as she felt the anguish and the loss of control from StormWind. She could tell he was losing control, it definitely wasn’t going to help but the storm started to rage. Trees were being ripped out of the earth, the rocks were beginning to fly around in a tornado.
She focused on her Sire taking her negative emotions and pushing them to the Blood Generals mind. They were losing and she could feel two more vampires from her family go down. There were now only 9 left not including StormWind.
StormWind could see now through the anger so he began to walk to where the Blood General was slowly rising after the empathic attack. He approached her and quickly murmured the spell that brought lightning down on her. The blood general her shields snapped. She dove out and grabbed another of the attackers tearing out two more throats with ease.
7 remained of the attackers from the ranks and their leader. The leader was enraged meaning he wasn’t even remotely in control of his magic and powers.
She ran which with her superspeed she staked one of the attacking vampires leaving 6 remaining vampires as well as the leader. She was running as fast as she could so that she could kill as many as possible.
StormWind was bringing the storm and his powers were raging. The Blood General grabbed him and took the stake to his heart. His body was convulsing with the lightning as it struck them both.
Both died in pain and with only 6 remaining attackers the Europeans quickly fled. This was there first defeat in history and the only time a Blood General to ever be killed in a war.
The remaining vampires that had been the family of StormWind they were going back to the family home. The Europeans would be a while in assigning a new blood general during that time the family would mourn as well as figure out how they would get things done going forward. None of them had ever thought of doing the leadership thing. This would end the family as they knew it.
———–
3 weeks had passed since the death of the father StormWind. It was weeks of peace and uncertainty. No battles were being fought and the official mourning period had ended.
Lynxa and 4 of her siblings had survived the battle. Out of 13 it was shocking to see that only 5 survived. The rest of what she thought as her siblings were leaving the area as they couldn’t handle the feelings that they would never see most of the family again.
SpringHawk was even talking about ending himself. He was so upset with the death of the father as he believed that person was the only one who had ever loved him.
As an empathy she understood his feelings as her family had all died many years before she was turned. This family that had been built and sustained by two or three people was now in disarray.
She had no idea what she would do but SummerFawn and Aranai needed to know what had happened. They deserved to know what had transpired and that they had won a battle but at what a cost.
Fearing this meeting she went to the elders and kneeled before them “I am sorry Elders”
SummerFawn looked at her “What is it child. We have heard nothing other than rumours for the past few weeks. Where is your sire”
She began to cry letting the blood tests streak her face. “He was very upset about what he said was your lack of providing us proper information or help. He scheduled a meeting with the family and his decision was to go after the Blood General.”
Aranai came closer “We haven’t had a single combat in that time what happened?”
She was sobbing “I am sorry but we tracked the Blood General camp and the 13 of us attacked the garrison. It wasn’t until it was too late that I realized that StormWind was enraged and had no control over his emotions. Unfortunately only 6 of the thirteen survived. StormWind sacrificed his life to take out Qadira. Both are dead which means peace until they appoint a new member as the Blood General.”
She could see tears lining their faces. They had all been good friends and it was sad for them to hear what had happened. “We are decimated with no way to fully support our group. We don’t own the property that many of our people have lived on that would go to his heirs. Most don’t want to be around the area and are moving further west. I need your help if we are to ensure that his death wasn’t in vain.”
They both nodded and Astucia entered. “I am very sorry for your loss. StormWind was such a gentle soul, he was my comfort when my husband died. I will mourn him as well as miss him forever. What do you need help with, as you know you could easily get a position anywhere in North America?”
She smiled “I am glad you realize that I am in demand enough to be able to go everywhere. However I don’t wish to leave the area and since my Sire was an elder I was hoping to be able to take his place and help to decide the approach to this war”
SummerFawn knew that this would be good to have her good friends daughter with them but there was something not quite right. She was an empath and that would sway her decisions in favour of many of those who were elders. Did she think her projective empathy would really be strong enough to breach the shields. “I can understand your family took the burden on and fought the Blood General Qadira. I believe you are ready for the power however I think the timing is wrong. You haven’t fully grieved yet abd may end up being detrimental to your development. As an empath I do understand more so than any other the draw of this place and wanting to help your people. Come back in a month and we will have our decision.”
With that Lynxa left. As she left they all exchanged glances, it was as each had some reservations about this request. It was something that has been done forever that a child would generally take over as elder when the master had passed away. This felt different. “Thoughts and I want youelrs as well Astucia despite not being one of my elders.”
Aranai stated “I think that she is going to do something drastic which will end in her death. She is unstable, she was leaking with her projective empathy we were all just well shielded. I think she doesn’t have the control right now. Maybe in a month she will once again in the straight and narrow. I just fear for her and others should she be given power”
They both nodded “The issue is that she has the right to demand the posting as elder as she is the strongest of his children. I think I will have no choice but to approve. Astucia what do you think?”
It was not what she wanted to say but she was prepared “I know the feeling of vengeance and how enticing it is to let the anger take over your entire life. She is close to the breaking point. I do have one way this could be handled. Have her go to a new Master with the intention that she will be joining the elders once she has her gifts under control as well as gets some time to mourn the death of both her real sister and her Sire.”
“It’s never been done to my knowledge. Generally when a vampire Sire dies his children become their own masters. How does it work Astucia?”
“It isn’t done often and it can be broken just like any bond that ties us together. It would basically a temporary replacement and wouldn’t be a permanent bond. It would allow her new master to be able to detect the issues and help her to learn that control. We did it quite a bit in Europe for young masters or young vampires who lost their Master to final death. It was something that they expect in all honesty if they are having issues with control”. Astucia understood this as they did this to the Queen Selene and it was still part of the French area.
This was nothing that SummerFawn had dealt with. “I am not sure forcing a new master is a good thing for either people. Maybe we could place her under the guidance of someone senior as a mentor so that she could join but still be kept in check”
Both nodded there was not going to be an easy way no matter what they did something was going to have to give. “Astucia do you think you could be her mentor? You aren’t an elder but you have a lot of experience and you also think before you act. You would work very well with a hothead as you have been there before.”
She nodded. “That’s fine I will mentor, she needs someone like me. It won’t be easy but I never cared for easy.”
That was it the decision was made now it was waiting for the final shoe to fall, when would the war start again and this time who would be the one taking over command.
