GARRETT
He shook his head, a futile attempt to dispel the fog that clouded his thoughts, and pushed himself off the decking. He struggled onto all fours, his movements sluggish and heavy, as if he were moving through a thick, unseen mire. Pain lanced through his right side, a sharp, unyielding torment that eclipsed the general ache pervading his body.
Still unable to see clearly, he gave his head another shake. As he labored to steady himself, fragments of memory began to coalesce in his mind, disjointed and hazy at first. He recalled a sensation of weightlessness, a sudden, forceful launch through the air, followed by a jarring impact as he collided with the unforgiving deck. A cursory self-assessment suggested nothing was broken, but every movement spoke to the ferocity of the fall; his body was a tapestry of pain.
Then, like a floodgate bursting open, memory surged back in a vivid, alarming rush. The mission to restore order and Confederation rule to Antares Station; the final beacon jump, the Valiant, the trap, so cunningly laid and expertly sprung; an ambush, an eruption of violence; a shocking exchange of fire, lasers, masers, and missiles streaking through the void.
Vision blurry, Garrett felt his breath catch in his throat as the full weight of the situation settled upon him. They had been baited, lured in, and savagely attacked. Fear, sharp and cold, began to seep into his veins, mingling with the adrenaline that still coursed through him…
