Young adult fantasy has been a staple for me in reading for the last 5 years. I find that the stories are fresher and they don’t use the same old tropes which is what the adult fantasy has done.
Fantasy as a genre has so much to offer which is why I am attracted to it. It gives you an out from realism and allows you to find something that is better potentially.
Bone Smith is a wonderful book that shows a different style of both writing and also a different style of magic. The magic and the world setting makes a lot of fun when you read.
This feels like a post apocalyptic take on a fantasy world where magic is prevalent but also where it is more about the people and how they survived.
The Breach is a place of fear where the Dead walk and where Wren a young and disgraced member of the ghost warriors. She wants to be accepted but was relegated to a backwoods border town where her abilities would be wasted.
Wren the character is very easy to read about. She is powerful but she also is trying to prove herself and that her being banished to the Breach was unjust.
The setting is very interesting and as I said earlier reminds me more of a post apocalyptic world. It did feel that it was more about a better life and a better world especially as the wars seemed to be over. You do feel that it is just a shadow of what is going on and that things aren’t really as good as what they seemed.
The pace of the story was quick and light and made the book seem like it was much smaller than what it was. It feels so good to see a book that has something unique and that it felt quick paced.
The story makes me really excited to see what else this author has to offer in her writing. I was very pleased when I read this book as it felt fresh as well as I loved the whole of the magic system that the author created. I do love unique systems like this and think that what this did was allow me to really immerse myself in the world.
I am looking forward to Ghost Smith as the first book was great despite the fact that the book Bone Smith ended on a bit of a cliffhanger which I generally hate this one wasn’t too bad.
