Sookie Stackhouse series or True Blood

The Sookie Stackhouse series is a southern vampire series written by Charlaine Harris which has 13 full length novels.

Also note that this series name was changed to True Blood as there was a show based loosely in the novels at one point.

The novels show a different side of southern life where vampires have now are out in the open.  It has a lot about southern life.

Sookie is just a standard run of the mill southern girl who works in a bar Merlotte’s.  She has a disability as she calls it.

She is as she knows a telepath but being telepathic is not all it’s cracked up to be.  It is very painful as you get to see as you can’t block out everything.

We meet a huge cast of great characters throughout the 13 books.  We go from normal humans, to vampires, shifters, weres and faeries.

Sookie:  the main character in the series is a strong and idealistic lady who works in the bar run by Sam Merlotte.  She is a telepath but tries not to let that change everything about her life.  Her life is intertwined with the supernatural world.

Sam Merlotte: is the owner of a local bar in Bon Temps Louisiana.  He has rental properties as well as the bar and he is a former member of the armed forces.  He is one of the unique true shifters and can turn into any animal he so wishes to be.

Bill: the first vampire you meet and while initially I enjoyed his character but I grew tired of him quickly.  I felt there was always something off with him.

Eric: the Viking vampire who while initially dislikable but he did grow upon me even if there were a lot of red flags about his behaviour qthar showed stalker vibes.

Pam:  she is Eric’s second and she always seemed to have the good heart and she wanted to protect others.  I enjoyed the growth of the character.  This is one of my favourite characters in the series.

Arlene: never liked this character as she always felt to be the user of her friends just to get what she wants.  She abuses her friendships and then wonders why she ended up friendless.

Quinn: the great were-tiger who helps run a company that does supernatural events.  He was a love interest of Sookie at one point but his family made things difficult.

Tara: she is the best friend of Sookie and while they had their ups and downs in the friendship they also know that they are there for each other.  Tara was a fun character who showed a remarkable growth from one book to the next until she is the most well rounded of the characters.

Alcide: once a favoured character who I began to dislike immensely as he seemed to become more aggressive as well as more abusive towards Sookie at times.

Andy: while initially I despised Andy a lot he became more of a normal person who was able to get over some of his prejudices about the undead.  He becomes a great support character eventually showing that he is very nice guy who cares deeply for his family.

Portia: Andy sister who is a lawyer and while she was annoying mostly but she did have some good qualities afterwards but she was just not the most loving person.

Jannalyn: a were that was powerful but also extremely aggressive and evil as well.  She betrayed her pack and her friends due to her jealousy.

Lafayette: he was so colourful but his antics good old pretty quickly which is why I was happy when they removed him from the books so as to put in other characters.

Niall: the prince of the faeries he was harsh but interesting it certainly kept the pace up well when he was around.

Jason: the brother of Sookie probably grew the most out of anyone.  When you meet him he is selfish as anything with no cares in the world except for his own pleasures.  He becomes a more rounded character and becomes good for his family as well as a solid person throughout the book.

Claudine: who doesn’t love a fairy godmother and that is exactly what she was. She was strong and protective at the same time she was so nurturing and made sure to take care of Sookie.

Claude: the brother of Claudine he was selfish and basically not a great person but he seemed to care to a point about his family.

Amelia: a powerful witch that is a close friend of Sookie.  She is very powerful and because of that she doesn’t always know when to keep herself out of others business.

The stories are very entertaining and they go over so many different styles of fantasy.  I love the combination of the different races, they bring the fantasy together in a very special way.

Vampires are my favourite of the races but they have so many other races as well.  I enjoy the shifters which also has many other aspects like the were creatures.

It is crazy how many of the interactions that the supernatural community has with Sookie.  It seems they she gets involved so often with the powerful people and then gets almost killed for her troubles.
