The Blood Awakens

Brigitte screamed in agony as her blood boiled.  She had never felt this pain before and it was something very new.  This was worse pain then when she had birthed her son and daughter.

Being embraced was not pleasant and her new master didn’t care that she was in pain.  Her heart was racing as if she had just drank 12 cups of coffee.

She opened her eyes and they had pinpoint vision and she could bring her eyes to focus on minute details.

Standing up hurt but she could feel her muscles strengthening.  They had tested her, and her strength was 5 times what most normal vampires could possess.

She was now part of House Vauclaire a noble house of vampires, one of the great houses.  Her Sire was Alaric Vauclaire the second in command of the great house.

The only one more powerful than Alaric was the true master of the house Remy.  They both had looked at Brigitte.  She was beautiful and had a body that many women would kill for.  They ran a blood whore dominion and it was one were they used the blood to keep the family in power.
——-

Brigitte woke from the nightmare of her awakening.  She had always feared those dreams as her father and grandfather were both scary.

She remembered when she became part of the family and it scared her more now than ever before.  Remy had been evil and had used so much fear to rule.  He was the last leader to have been in a war of the houses.

Now it seemed like she would be the next one.  She ruled the house for centuries.  Now she was trying to figure out if she would be starting a war.

——

Alaric was a good man to Brigitte and after 35 years she broke the bond of Sire so that she could begin a family.

Her and Alaric married and they were happy with one dark spot.  Remy didn’t recognize it and wasn’t happy that his second in command was beholden to a woman.

Remy was not good and he had still forced Brigitte to be a blood whore to assist with the family’s power.

She realized what was really bothering her was the more she thought about what she wanted she sounded like Remy who was far from moral.

Remy was no longer amongst the undead having been sent to his final death 125 years after Brigitte had been turned.  She started to drift back to sleep.

——

The Death of Remy

The great chamber of House Vauclaire had never been so quiet.

Remy stood before the enormous fireplace, one hand resting casually upon the carved stone mantle. Behind him, flames danced beneath the ancient crest of the House.

For centuries, that crest had belonged to him.

Everyone beneath it had belonged to him.

At least, that was what Remy believed.

Alaric entered first.

Brigitte followed several steps behind him.

Remy glanced over his shoulder.

“Alaric.”

There was no affection in the greeting.

Only expectation.

Alaric stopped in the center of the chamber.

“My Lord.”

Remy finally turned.

His eyes shifted toward Brigitte.

A smile touched his lips.

“And you brought my troublesome little prodigy with you.”

Brigitte’s expression remained perfectly still.

She had learned long ago that Remy enjoyed reactions. Fear amused him. Anger entertained him.

Tonight she would give him neither.

Remy walked toward her.

“You have caused me considerable difficulty, Brigitte.”

“So I have been told.”

“You were given everything.”

Brigitte almost laughed.

“Everything?”

“Immortality. Power. A place within one of the greatest vampire Houses in France.”

Remy stopped before her.

“You were nothing before us.”

Brigitte looked directly into his eyes.

“I was a mother.”

Something flickered across Remy’s face.

“I was a woman. I had children. I had a life.”

Her voice hardened.

“Then Alaric found me.”

Alaric lowered his eyes.

Brigitte noticed.

So did Remy.

“And now look at you,” Remy said. “Stronger than almost every creature of your bloodline. Beautiful. Feared. Immortal.”

His smile returned.

“You should be thanking us.”

Brigitte stepped closer.

“I’ve spent years deciding which of you I hated more.”

Alaric looked at her.

Remy laughed.

“And?”

Brigitte’s eyes remained upon Remy.

“I decided you.”

The laughter stopped.

Remy’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Brigitte saw it.

He finally understood why they were there.

Remy looked toward Alaric.

“You brought her here to threaten me?”

“No.”

Alaric raised his head.

“I brought her here to kill you.”

Silence.

Then Remy laughed again.

This time there was no amusement in it.

“You?”

His eyes narrowed.

“You would betray your master?”

Alaric slowly removed his coat.

“I have served you for more years than I care to remember.”

“You exist because I permitted it.”

“No.”

Alaric tossed the coat aside.

“I exist despite you.”

Remy’s face twisted with rage.

“You ungrateful bastard.”

He moved.

Brigitte had never seen anything so fast.

Remy crossed the chamber and struck Alaric hard enough to send him crashing through an oak table.

The ancient wood exploded beneath him.

Brigitte attacked immediately.

Remy turned just as she reached him.

His fist caught her across the face.

Pain exploded through her jaw.

She flew backward, struck a stone column and dropped to one knee.

Remy stared at her.

Surprise replaced anger.

Brigitte wiped blood from her mouth.

She smiled.

“That hurt.”

Remy’s eyes narrowed.

Brigitte stood.

“But not enough.”

She charged.

Remy met her.

The impact sounded like two horses colliding.

Brigitte grabbed his wrist.

Remy tried pulling free.

For the first time, his expression changed completely.

Brigitte was stronger than he expected.

Much stronger.

She twisted.

Bone cracked.

Remy roared.

Alaric came from behind and drove his shoulder into Remy’s back.

All three crashed against the fireplace.

Remy spun and seized Alaric by the throat.

“You were my second!”

His fingers tightened.

“I trusted you!”

Alaric struggled against his grip.

“That was your mistake.”

Remy suddenly screamed.

Brigitte had buried a dagger into his side.

He released Alaric and struck her.

Brigitte stumbled backward.

Remy pulled the weapon free.

Blood poured down his clothing.

He stared at the blade.

Then at Brigitte.

“You think steel will kill me?”

“No.”

Brigitte smiled.

“I think he will.”

Remy turned.

Too late.

Alaric drove a sword through Remy’s back.

The blade erupted from his chest.

Remy’s mouth opened.

No sound emerged.

Alaric stood directly behind him, both hands wrapped around the sword’s hilt.

Remy looked down at the blade.

Then slowly back toward Alaric.

“You…”

Alaric leaned closer.

“I served House Vauclaire.”

He twisted the sword.

Remy gasped.

“I never served you.”

Alaric ripped the blade free.

Remy collapsed onto his knees.

Brigitte approached.

Remy looked up at her.

For the first time since she had known him, the master of House Vauclaire looked old.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

His certainty was gone.

The arrogance had disappeared.

There was fear in his eyes.

“You cannot kill me,” Remy whispered. “The House needs me.”

Brigitte crouched before him.

“No.”

She gently touched his cheek.

For an instant the gesture almost seemed affectionate.

“The House survived you.”

Remy stared at her.

“And it will become greater without you.”

She stood.

Remy looked between them.

“Which one of you thinks they will replace me?”

Neither answered.

Remy laughed weakly.

“You will destroy each other.”

Alaric stepped beside Brigitte.

“Perhaps.”

Brigitte reached down and grabbed Remy by the hair.

“But you won’t be here to see it.”

She pulled his head backward.

Remy’s eyes widened.

“Brigitte—”

Alaric raised the sword.

Brigitte held Remy perfectly still.

Their eyes met.

Alaric hesitated.

Not from mercy.

From the weight of what they were about to do.

Remy had ruled House Vauclaire for centuries.

His death would change everything.

Brigitte whispered:

“Do it.”

The sword came down.

Remy’s head struck the stone floor.

His body remained kneeling for several impossible seconds before collapsing beside it.

Silence returned to the chamber.

Brigitte released the handful of Remy’s hair still caught between her fingers.

Alaric stared at the corpse.

Neither spoke.

The fire crackled behind them.

Finally Brigitte walked toward the ancient crest carved above the fireplace.

HOUSE VAUCLAIRE.

A name that had existed long before Remy.

A name that would continue without him.

Alaric wiped Remy’s blood from his sword.

“You understand what happens now?”

Brigitte looked over her shoulder.

“Every enemy Remy ever frightened will test us.”

“Yes.”

“Every ally who feared him will reconsider their loyalty.”

“Yes.”

“And someone will have to control the House.”

Alaric studied her.

For a moment Brigitte wondered whether the next fight would be between them.

Instead Alaric lowered his sword.

He bowed his head.

Not deeply.

Just enough.

Brigitte understood.

She turned toward Remy’s body.

The vampire who had once controlled everything was now nothing more than blood staining ancient stone.

Brigitte stared down at him.

“You told me I was nothing before House Vauclaire.”

She stepped over his corpse.

“You were wrong.”

Brigitte walked toward the doors.

“I was simply something you hadn’t learned to fear yet.”

Behind her, Alaric smiled.

And for the first time in centuries, House Vauclaire had no master.

———
Alaric had been born into the mortal Vauclaire bloodline. He had known the truth of his family’s undead rulers from childhood, but remained human until illness threatened to kill him. Rather than allow the last true heir of the Vauclaire name to die, the House gave him the Embrace. Alaric took control of the House,

Power seems to attract power and under the guidance of Alaric and his wife Brigitte they started to grow.  This lasted for 6 centuries when Alaric finally stepped into retirement and allowed his loving wife to stand in.

Under Brigittes rule things grew even more powerful as she brought over only those who were loyal and who had proven themselves.

Brigitte created the house as a blood whore house with willing members of her house taking blood from others to sustain their lives.

It was a good life and all of them prospered for over 3 centuries.  It was her policy that she had kept her numbers down reasonable to the first blood which meant turned by the ancients, or the second blood turned by first blood.

When she disappeared there were 20 First bloods and 40 second bloods.  they had 5 third bloods and maybe 10 4th bloods.  A total of 75 members not including Brigitte.  They were the smallest of the great houses but also the most powerful as well.

She was now doing an audit of who still remained.  Delphine was around but also had to be careful until they destroyed Mander then she would be truly free.

Aurelie was the bright point; she had never stopped searching and had helped Astucia find the truth.  She wasn’t a strong fighter like Astucia.

She realized now why Remy had survived so long.  He didn’t let anyone get away with anything.  He was ruthless to those he was allowed with as well as those who were part of the house.  Mercy was a luxury and it was one that Remy never used.

That terrified her more than she cared to think.  She was coming around to believing that Mercy didn’t work and that she would need to show strength.  She feared that so much as she had hated using fear to do anything but someone was working against her and she needed to know.

—–

Etienne languished in the secret home that Severin had given them to live.  He felt calm about what he had done to betray the family.  His sire was not anyone he wanted to be with but he had turned him despite the fact that they were blood family.

Betraying his son was easy as he had taken evil steps to make himself strong.  He wanted nothing more than to die a normal human life with both his wife and his children.  All of them were embraced as a punishment because he had refused to allow his son access to them anymore.

He could feel more attuned to his environment, it would be interesting as he didn’t know when they would come for him soon enough.  His ownership was now gone from his son and with Severin.

Severin entered “You have done well bringing to me 3 more vampires linked to Alexandre.  That is 7 in total who have been bound in blood to me.”

He nodded and Etienne said “And my reward to be made a master vampire”

The laugh was vindictive and cruel and the eyes showed a mirth that wasn’t felt by all.  “You fool, You haven’t broken free for the last 200 years.  You can’t just be released from anyone you are bound to. “

He glared “You said you could get me powerful.  Was that a lie to get me to betray my son?”

Severin laughed “Not in the least.  I have helped you attain power; it is just not what you wanted.  You are free of your son and you have a dominion of your own.  You will just never become a master like myself.”

He walked away laughing all the time that the stupid peasant believed he was strong enough to become the master.

——-

Brigitte was looking at the list of her household and it has shrunk from 75 to less than 40.  For the first born where there were 20 there were now 12.  The rest were halved as well.

Delphine was a slave of King Mander.  Sarah had been executed for being a traitor.  Many of her daughters are gone now.  The other first blood Damon was from Alaric and his creation and he had never been too good at following orders and went with Alaric as a bodyguard.

—–

Alaric had once been a feared vampire now he was in his retirement.  Damon had stood by him throughout all the trials and tribulations of leadership and then into retirement.

Damon had a way of keeping people away.  He was projecting fear.  He had not met many of his house in so long so it came as a shock when Etienne came in and introduced himself as a member of House Vauclaire.

“Welcome to my humble abode.  It has been a lot of years since a member of my house has come to visit me.  Who did you say your sire was?”

Etienne smiled trying to show his charm which was what he used to keep himself out of trouble for years before the vampiric curse.  “I didn’t.  My master is Alexandre who was sired by your wife Brigitte”

He nodded “Yes, so you are second blood.  How did you get changed?”

Etienne smiled “My true born son is Alexandre and he thought that as a way to create a lesson for my unkindness to him would be to turn me and my family”

Alaric smiled; he felt the stirring of something and it wasn’t good.  The blood scent wasn’t of family; it was hidden back further but a scent he knew well was on there.  Severin had broke the bond and enforced a new bond on this man.

Damon slipped from the shadows before Etienne realized there was anyone else in the room.

An arm locked around his throat.

Etienne tried to shout, but Damon tightened his grip.

Seconds later, his body went limp.

Damon lowered him carefully to the floor.

“He smells of dishonesty.”

Alaric didn’t answer.

He was staring at the unconscious vampire.

Something about the blood had awakened a memory he had not thought about in centuries.

He crouched beside Etienne and placed two fingers against his throat.

There.

Beneath Alexandre’s blood.

Beneath the remnants of House Vauclaire.

Something else.

Someone else.

Alaric’s expression hardened.

“Not dishonesty.”

Damon looked at him.

“What, then?”

Alaric slowly stood.

“Severin.”

The name hung between them.

Damon’s expression changed immediately.

Alaric hadn’t spoken that name in years.

“He’s altered the blood bond,” Alaric said.

“Can that be done?”

“Yes.”

Alaric looked toward the door through which Etienne had entered.

“But not easily.”

Damon glanced at the unconscious vampire.

“Then why send him here?”

Alaric was silent for several seconds.

That was the question.

Etienne hadn’t come to kill him. He wasn’t remotely powerful enough.

He hadn’t come merely to spy. Severin had better servants for that.

Then Alaric understood.

His eyes narrowed.

“He wasn’t sent here to attack me.”

“What was he sent for?”

Alaric looked at Damon.

“To find out whether I was still dangerous.”

Damon smiled faintly.

“And?”

For the first time in decades, something appeared in Alaric’s eyes that Damon remembered from the old days.

The look of the vampire who had helped bring Remy Vauclaire to his final death.

Alaric looked down at Etienne.

“Let’s disappoint them.”

—–

Alaric stood in the dungeon as he watched Damon put the blood altered vampire on the wrack.

Alaric was looking forward to this as there hadn’t been anyone tortured in his home in centuries.  This person needed to answer and tell them what he did and what his motives were.

Damon was a master at torture and had been since his fledgling days even before he was embraced.  He would get the information from this vampire no matter what it cost Etienne.  He thought it was punishment to be turned by his own blood son, he has not endured punishment yet.

Thinking through the last time he has seen Brigitte it was just after she had turned Alexandre and he had witnessed how cunning and ruthless the boy really was.  The boy had never told his own children what he really was and how powerful the house was.  He doubted Etienne even knew much about the culture of the vampires or that he was part of the Ancient houses.

Once answers were received he would have to return to the land of the unliving and deal with the issues and see his wife.

The Wrack

Etienne woke to the sound of iron moving.

Not chains.

Gears.

He opened his eyes.

For several seconds, he didn’t understand where he was.

The chamber was small, windowless and ancient. The stone walls were blackened with age, illuminated by four candles positioned around the room.

Then Etienne tried to move.

His wrists were bound.

So were his ankles.

He looked down.

His body was stretched across an enormous wooden frame reinforced with black iron.

His stomach dropped.

“No.”

A voice came from the darkness.

“Yes.”

Damon stepped into the candlelight.

Etienne pulled against the restraints.

They didn’t move.

“What is this?”

Damon looked almost disappointed by the question.

“A wrack.”

“I know what it is!”

“Then why did you ask?”

Etienne stared at him.

Damon walked toward the mechanism at the end of the device. He rested one hand upon the enormous iron wheel connected to the ropes holding Etienne’s ankles.

Etienne looked around desperately.

“Where is Alaric?”

“Watching.”

Etienne froze.

Alaric stepped from the darkness.

He had changed since their earlier meeting.

The hospitable retired nobleman was gone.

This was Alaric Vauclaire.

Former master of the House.

Former second to Remy.

Brigitte’s sire.

And suddenly Etienne understood that retirement had never made Alaric harmless.

“I am part of your House,” Etienne said.

Alaric’s expression didn’t change.

“You were.”

Etienne swallowed.

“I am Alexandre’s blood.”

“No.”

Alaric approached the wrack.

“You carry traces of Alexandre’s blood. There is a difference.”

Etienne’s face betrayed him.

Alaric saw it.

“So I was right.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Alaric looked at Damon.

Damon turned the wheel.

Click.

The ropes tightened.

Etienne felt his arms and legs pulled in opposite directions.

He grunted.

Damon stopped.

Alaric continued calmly.

“Who changed your allegiance?”

“No one.”

Click.

Another turn.

Etienne clenched his teeth.

“Who changed your allegiance?”

“I told you—”

Click.

Pain tore through Etienne’s shoulders.

He screamed.

Damon stopped.

Alaric didn’t even blink.

“You are going to tell us eventually.”

Etienne breathed heavily.

Go to hell.”

Damon smiled.

“That one usually costs another turn.”

The wheel moved.

Click.

Etienne screamed again.

His entire body strained against the restraints.

“SEVERIN!”

Silence.

Damon released the wheel.

Alaric stepped closer.

“Say it again.”

Etienne gasped for breath.

“Severin.”

Alaric looked toward Damon.

Neither appeared surprised.

“How many?”

Etienne hesitated.

Damon touched the wheel.

“Seven!”

Alaric’s eyes narrowed.

“Seven what?”

“Seven vampires!”

“Whose blood?”

Etienne closed his eyes.

Damon turned the wheel slightly.

Etienne screamed.

“Alexandre’s!”

Alaric’s expression finally changed.

Not much.

But Etienne saw the anger.

“You delivered seven members of Alexandre’s bloodline to Severin?”

Etienne tried desperately to justify himself.

“They weren’t killed.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“They’re alive.”

Alaric leaned closer.

“Bound?”

Etienne didn’t answer.

Damon placed both hands upon the wheel.

“Bound?” Alaric repeated.

“Yes.”

“To Severin?”

“Yes!”

Alaric walked away from the wrack.

Damon watched him.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then Alaric asked the question Etienne feared most.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Damon turned the wheel.

Click.

Etienne screamed.

“I DON’T KNOW!”

Damon stopped.

Alaric turned around.

“You betrayed your son. You delivered members of his bloodline to another master. You allowed Severin to alter your allegiance, and you expect me to believe you never asked why?”

“He promised me freedom!”

Alaric stared at him.

Etienne continued desperately.

“Alexandre turned me against my will. He turned my wife. My children. He took everything from me!”

“And Severin gave it back?”

“He promised to.”

Alaric almost smiled.

Almost.

“You traded one master for another.”

“I didn’t know!”

“You didn’t care.”

Etienne fell silent.

That accusation hurt differently.

Alaric approached him again.

“You didn’t care what Severin intended to do to Alexandre. You didn’t care what happened to those seven vampires. You didn’t care what happened to House Vauclaire.”

“He punished me!”

“Alexandre?”

“Yes!”

Etienne’s voice cracked with anger.

“My own son turned me into this!”

Alaric stared at him.

“And therefore everyone else deserved your vengeance?”

Etienne didn’t answer.

Alaric looked at Damon.

“One turn.”

Etienne’s eyes widened.

“No.”

Damon gripped the wheel.

“Wait.”

Click.

“WAIT!”

Click.

Etienne screamed.

His body strained violently against the ropes.

“STOP!”

Damon stopped.

Etienne lay trembling upon the wrack.

Alaric leaned over him.

“Where is Severin?”

Etienne breathed rapidly.

“I can’t tell you.”

Damon looked amused.

Alaric wasn’t.

“Can’t?”

Etienne shook his head.

“He’ll know.”

“Know what?”

“That I betrayed him.”

Alaric’s eyes narrowed.

“Blood compulsion?”

Etienne nodded.

“He’ll feel it.”

That interested Alaric.

Very much.

He placed two fingers against Etienne’s neck.

For several moments he concentrated upon the blood moving beneath the vampire’s skin.

Then he pulled his hand away.

“Clever.”

Damon looked toward him.

“What?”

“Severin isn’t merely binding them.”

Alaric looked down at Etienne.

“He’s creating a network.”

Etienne stared at him.

“A what?”

Alaric ignored him.

“Seven vampires connected to Alexandre. Each rebound through Severin.”

Damon understood.

“He’s trying to reach Alexandre through his descendants.”

“Perhaps.”

Alaric looked troubled.

“Or someone above Alexandre.”

Brigitte.

Neither man said her name.

They didn’t need to.

Alaric returned his attention to Etienne.

“Where is Severin?”

Etienne shook his head.

“I told you.”

Damon rested his hand upon the wheel.

Alaric’s voice became almost gentle.

“You misunderstand your position.”

Etienne looked at him.

“Severin convinced you that Alexandre was your enemy. Then he convinced you that betraying your blood would make you powerful.”

Alaric leaned closer.

“He lied.”

Etienne’s breathing quickened.

“And now you’ve walked into the home of the vampire who ruled House Vauclaire for six centuries.”

Alaric straightened.

“You are going to tell me everything.”

“I can’t.”

Alaric looked at Damon.

Damon smiled.

This time Etienne understood what that smile meant.

“No.”

Damon turned the wheel.

Click.

Etienne screamed.

Click.

“STOP!”

Click.

“I’LL TALK!”

Damon stopped.

Etienne sobbed unnecessary breaths into dead lungs.

Alaric waited.

Finally Etienne whispered an address.

Damon looked toward Alaric.

Alaric remained silent.

“There,” Etienne said. “That’s where Severin kept us. That’s where he changed the bonds.”

“Kept who?”

“My family.”

Alaric’s expression hardened.

“And the seven?”

Etienne nodded.

“Some of them.”

“Some?”

“Severin moved the others.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Damon touched the wheel.

“I DON’T KNOW!”

Alaric raised his hand.

Damon stopped.

Etienne stared at him desperately.

“I swear.”

Alaric studied him.

Then he believed him.

That didn’t mean Etienne was finished.

Alaric walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

Alaric stopped.

“To send a message to my wife.”

Fear entered Etienne’s eyes.

“Brigitte?”

Alaric looked over his shoulder.

For the first time that evening, he smiled.

“You betrayed Alexandre.”

Etienne stared at him.

“You helped Severin steal members of his bloodline.”

Alaric opened the door.

“And now I have to tell Alexandre’s mother.”

Etienne pulled desperately against the restraints.

“No. Wait.”

Alaric stepped through the doorway.

“Alaric!”

The door began closing.

“ALARIC!”

Alaric paused.

Etienne stared desperately through the narrowing opening.

“What happens to me?”

Alaric looked toward Damon.

Then back at Etienne.

“That depends upon how much Damon believes you haven’t told us.”

The door closed.

Etienne slowly turned his head.

Damon remained beside the wrack.

One hand rested upon the wheel.

Etienne swallowed.

“I told him everything.”

Damon nodded.

“I know.”

Relief appeared on Etienne’s face.

Then Damon pulled a chair across the stone floor and sat beside him.

“But Alaric asked about Severin.”

Etienne’s relief disappeared.

Damon leaned forward.

“I want to know everyone else you betrayed.”

His hand returned to the wheel.

“And unlike my sire…”

Damon smiled.

“I have nowhere else to be.”

—–

The portal of blood looks almost like just a red swirling mist.  Alaric stepped out of it into House Vauclaire Mansion.  It had been a long time since he had shown up here.  When he wanted time with his wife she had always come to Alaric Keep.

He could sense something was off from the moment he stepped through.  A lady who had olive toned skin stood there with swords drawn.  “Breaking into one of the houses is not smart”

He laughed “Who are you to tell me where to go in Vauclaire property.  I am Alaric Vauclaire and I will see Brigitte.”. he said in the tone that had withered many spines of men.

She bowed as she had heard that name before “I am Astucia 2nd blood or Alexandre.  Follow me Lord Alaric I will take you to our Master”

He nodded and followed regally behind her.  So this was Astucia.  She didn’t look like much but her ferocity and combat instincts had won over many of the old guard.  “I have heard much about your prowess in combat Astucia.  You have learned much from my wife “

“Thank you my Lord.  I have heard much about your rule.  You brought us to a place where we grew and were at peace.”

He nodded “Very true and now we are close to war again. “

They walked into the chambers and Brigitte gave a scream of happiness and launched herself into his open arms.  They stayed that way for a good 10 minutes.

He looked at her “There are many issues, my love.  I caught a blood traitor and we have questioned him.  Etienne was never brought into the family and he managed to try and destroy it.  He was punished as he said.  He has had his family plus a few others turn against their masters.  Most are against Alexandre but two top masters are among the names.  Elyne and Placido have turned on the family. “

She nodded “We found out about Etienne being turned and how he betrayed us.  Is he still alive?”

He nodded “He was when I left but Damon is still questioning him and you know his methods aren’t conducive to a long life.  I take it you wish to send his master over there to do what must be done?”

She shook her head “No Alexandre already has told me he doesn’t wish to see him right.  He is upset that he isn’t certain he would be able to hold back on him.  Damon can play with him until he has all his answers.”

He smiled “Oh you know Damon well, my love.  He loves playing with them.  We will soon have the answers but we need to capture Severin and find out what house or who is truly responsible for this mess.  We may need to go to war before we get back to peace.”

What would come, would come.  Only time would tell whether war would be brought upon them or would there be a chance for peace to prevail.
